As New Yorkers salivate over the prospect of the two local baseball teams facing off in an all-Gotham World Series, local restaurants are grabbing hometown “heroes” — sandwich specials sliced in their honor.
Benateri’s Italian Food in College Point, just a few miles from Citi Field and a favorite among Mets players, is serving up a special called the OMG, piled high with chunks of chicken dipped in vodka sauce, fresh mozzarella melted, crispy bacon and hot crushed red pepper. flakes on crispy oatmeal bread.
“This sandwich is hot and fiery, just like the Mets,” said co-owner Angelo Baretta of the sandwich, which is named for the Mets anthem made popular by infielder Jose Iglesias.

“We sold 45 in a day, making it our best-selling special ever,” said Rocky’s owner Bill Vissicchio.
“One customer said it looked like a polar bear with the provolone cascading. Another said the pound of flesh was larger than life, as was Pete Alonso.
Vissicchio grew up on Long Island and has filled the walls of his Georgia restaurant with Mets memorabilia, including a railing from the old Shea Stadium and a freeway sign that reads, “Citi Field 821 Miles.”
He said 60% of his customers are New Yorkers.
Now gearing up to celebrate Aaron Judge’s World Series MVP win, Joe’s Deli in Spring Lake, NJ, is adding a hero filled with proscuittini, capicola, salami, hot soppressata, pepperoni, fresh mozzarella to its lineup and roasted and hot peppers.
Its owner, Joey Valentino, whose parents opened the eatery in 1984, said the subdivision will likely carry the #99 name, for the prolific Yankees right fielder.
“This is Yankee food through and through,” Valentino said. “We’re such Yankee fans that our cousin, Lee Mazzilli, played for the Mets and we were still Yankee fans.”
Meanwhile, Park Wood Deli in Midland Park, NJ, is putting together a twist called the Grand Eastern—garlic-roasted pulled pork, smoked Virginia bacon, melted Baby Swiss, house-made plantains and sweet, mustard-infused pickles. yellow and served hot with Italian bread.

They also changed their Philly cheesesteaks to “LFGM Flushing Queens Cheesesteaks” and served them with Polar Bear sauce, made from horseradish.
When they posted the renamed steak at X, they were bombarded with 75 comments, mostly from angry Philly fans, Brummer said.
“There was pretty bad commentary for most of the day, until the Mets scored five runs in the game. Then they were silent.”
