The latest sugary sweet fizzy concoction has the internet in a frenzy.
Thanks to the Hulu hit “Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” drinks known as “dirty sodas,” revealed to be wildly popular in Utah, have gone global.
But the #MomTok drink – which involves adding flavored syrups and creams to your chosen batch – has taken a new form online as TikTokkers create their own concoctions, using Diet Coke.
Protein Diet Coke, for example, has become a big push on the social media site – involving a generous glass of the sugar-free drink combined with a protein shake.
The concoction has been compared to an ice cream float – or “better” than one, for some with a sweet tooth – and has been called “genius” and received excellent reviews “an 11 out of 10”.
Critics, however, called it “disgusting” and “gross”.
“This is phenomenal,” Meredith Hayden, better known online as Wishbone Kitchen, said in a TikTok video while trying the drink, calling it “identical” to a root beer.
Although, it is probably a little healthier than the popular dessert.
While health experts wouldn’t advise against the trendy bevvy, it’s worth noting that Diet Coke doesn’t add any nutritional value – consuming the drink is essentially the same as consuming just a protein shake.
Registered sports dietitian Jessica Isaacs told Self that she “could see some pros” to trying the drink, such as the nutritional boost of protein, electrolytes, calcium and carbohydrates.
“You take something like a Diet Coke that doesn’t have any nutrients, and you’re basically growing her food,” she explained.
In an article for Today, registered dietitian Natalie Rizzo noted that Diet Protein Coke has almost as many calories as a full-sugar Coca-Cola, adding that it’s best to drink “in moderation.”
“For people who like Diet Coke protein, I would suggest limiting it to a post-workout recovery drink to help build muscle, or a snack to keep you full between meals,” she wrote.
“Think of it as a protein shake with a splash of sugar-free soda for added flavor. But then again, you can just drink the protein milk on its own.”
On Saturday, singer Dua Lipa even tried her hand at a DIY cola creation, taking to TikTok to brag about her quirky recipe.
The “levitating” hitmaker was sitting at a restaurant when she added pickles, pickle juice, jalepeños and jalepeño juice to her plastic cup of Diet Coke.
While some viewers were concerned about the spicy yet bitter drink, others said they were “intrigued” to try and vowed to test the drink later.
This isn’t the first time the pop star has introduced fans to strange food combinations.
The Don’t Start Now diva was part of a larger food movement championing olive oil ice cream, a dessert that went viral earlier this year.
